Particulars of Organization, Functions and Duties
2.1 Objective/purpose of the public authority. :
1. Impart the best learning opportunity to the students vide State-of-art techniques
and continuous enhancement of required facilities, curriculam and delivery
process.

2.3 Brief history of the public authority and context of its formation.
Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI) which was formerly known as Directorate of Marine Engineering Training was established in 1948 at Calcutta by Govt. of India. On recommendation of the Merchant Navy Officers Training Committee, Engineers’ Training was shifted from T.S.Dufferine to DMET in 1949 and Course started in 1949 August.
MERI (formerly DMET) is the only Institute of its kind in India and one of the most prestigious Institute for Marine Engineering in Asia. The Institute is under MOST,Govt. of India and administered by Directorate General of Shipping, Mumbai and has been funded by Govt. of India. The Institute is presently under the domain of ‘Indian Institute of Maritime Studies’, Mumbai. The graduation Certificate awarded by this Institute is accepted by IMO. The Institute being affiliated to Jadavpur Unuiversity, the pass out students get the Bachellor Marine Degree from the University.
Present premises of MERI was set up and inaugurated in 1953 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. It has a campus of 33 acres of land encompassing main college administration building, hostel for the Cadets/students and residential building for Officers and Staff.
MERI has a large Workshop with adequate Machineries and steam and Diesel power plants for training of Cadets/students meet I.M.O. and A.I.C.T.E. requirements. In addition, cadets also visit marine Workshop for on the job training in Marine Engineering. Adequately equipped laboratories are provided for cadets/students to conduct various practical experiments. Adequate class rooms and teaching aids are provided satisfying the A.I.C.T.E. requirement.
For the Games and sports, there are one football ground, one hockey ground, one Olympic size swimming pool, various courts for other outdoors games and arrangement for indoor games including gymnasium.
Hostel for the cadets have capacity of about 500 seats including single seated rooms for final year students. Food is supplied to the cadets by Cadets’ Mess Committee which consists of members elected by the cadets every year.
Institute has adequate faculty members as per A.I.C.T.E. and I.M.O. requirements.
Institute also ensures strict disciplined hostel life for cadets similar to on board ship life. Regular parades, fall in, physical training etc. are conducted. Cadets also take part in ex-curricular activities like cultural activity and engineering model making etc.
Institute is equipped with a dispensary for medical treatment of cadets. In case of serious illness, services of leading hospitals of the city is also availed.
Institute is committed to continuous development of all its infrastructure and facilities for producing finest marine engineers.
2.4 Duties of the public authority.
This Institute primarily imparts training/education for student selected through IIT-JEE all over the country and abroad. N attaining four year training course, a Degree in Marine Engineering issued by Jadavpur University is awarded which is also duly approved by AICTE (all India Council for Technical Education). The Institution takes immense pride in her alumni who at present apart from being regarded as one of the finest Marine Engineers around the globe, presently manning shipping world over. She is also satisfying the present need of STCW-95 Convention of IMO and is an ISO-9001-2000 certified Institution. Her students apart from shipping also well established in the avenues such as Administrative services, management, entrepreneurship, etc. Today she embodies discipline, dedication and integrity of the highest order in the Maritime field with more than 5000 floating ambassadors of the country sailing all over the globe.

In addition to running the core course, our Branch at Mumbai conducts the one t year full time Marine EngineeringTraining programme for the graduates of Mechanical Engineering/Naval Architecture and also B.SC (Maritime Science) - a 3 years polyvalent Degree course under the aegis of University of Mumbai. The Institute started conducting various mandatory pre-sea modular courses for cadets.
MERI(Mumbai) has submitted R.T.I. manuals separately.
